Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 28, 2026
Moon Journal ("we," "us," or "the app") is a personal moon-phase journaling app. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices you have. We built Moon Journal to keep your personal content on your device.
The short version
- No account required. Moon Journal has no login. We do not collect your name or email address.
- Your journal stays on your device. Journal entries, your name, and your birthday are stored locally on your phone and are never uploaded to our servers.
- We don't track you. No advertising, no analytics SDKs, no cross-app tracking.
Information stored only on your device
The following never leaves your phone (it is saved in the app's local storage):
- Your journal entries and any moods or emotions you log.
- Your first name and birthday, and the zodiac signs calculated from them.
- Your in-app preferences and settings.
Information sent to our servers
To make the app work, the app sends a limited amount of non-identifying data to our backend:
- A randomly generated device identifier that is not linked to your real-world identity.
- Your push notification token and the notification preferences you choose, so we can deliver the celestial alerts you've enabled.
- Your subscription status (whether you have an active subscription or trial), for our records.
- Requests for astronomical content (moon phases, zodiac, seasons, meteor showers). These are general content requests and do not include your journal entries or identity.
Location
With your permission, the app uses your device's location to calculate accurate moonrise, moonset, sunrise, and sunset times for where you are. This calculation happens on your device โ your precise GPS coordinates are not sent to our servers. If you do not grant precise location access, the app may estimate your approximate location from your IP address using a third-party service (ipapi.co) to provide reasonable default times. You can deny or revoke location access at any time in your device settings; the app will fall back to a default location.
Subscriptions and payments
Moon Journal offers optional premium subscriptions. Purchases are processed by the official app store you installed the app from โ Apple's App Store on iOS, or Google Play on Android โ and we never see or store your payment details. Subscriptions are managed through RevenueCat, our subscription infrastructure provider, which receives your purchase information and the device identifier described above to determine your access. Please refer to Apple's, Google's, and RevenueCat's privacy policies for their practices.
Third-party services
We rely on a small number of service providers that may process limited data on our behalf:
- Apple โ payment processing and push notification delivery (iOS).
- Google Play โ payment processing (Android).
- RevenueCat โ subscription management and entitlement validation.
- Expo โ push notification delivery.
- ipapi.co โ approximate location from IP address (used only as a fallback when precise location is unavailable).
We do not use advertising networks, analytics SDKs, or cross-app tracking.
Notifications
If you enable them, we send push notifications for celestial events (new moon, full moon, meteor showers, eclipses) and optional journal reminders, based on the categories and timings you select. You can turn these off at any time in the app or in your device settings.
Children's privacy
Moon Journal is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Data retention and deletion
Because your journal and profile live on your device, deleting the app removes them. The app also provides a "Delete Account / Data" option that clears your local data and requests removal of your device's record (push token and subscription record) from our servers. You can disable location and notifications at any time in your device settings.
Security
We use reasonable technical measures to protect the limited data transmitted to our servers, including encrypted connections (HTTPS). No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
