Moon-Journal ("we," "us," or "the app") is a personal moon-phase journaling app. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices you have. We built Moon-Journal to keep your personal content on your device.
The short version
- No journal account required. The app has no journal account or login. Providing a name or birthday is optional.
- Your journal stays on your device. We do not upload your journal entries, name or birthday to our servers. You can choose to export or share a copy yourself.
- No advertising or tracking SDKs. The app does not use advertising networks, analytics SDKs or cross-app tracking.
Information stored only on your device
The app stores your journal entries and emotions, optional first name and birthday, manually chosen or birthday-derived zodiac signs, location preference and other personal settings on your device. Notification preferences are also sent to our backend when needed to deliver the celestial alerts you enable.
You can choose your zodiac signs without providing a birthday. Your name, birthday and personal sign selections are not included in the app's general content requests. See Exports and backups for copies you choose to save outside the app.
Information sent to our servers
To provide subscriptions, content and notifications, the app sends limited technical information to our backend:
- A randomly generated device identifier used for device registration and subscription-related records.
- Your device platform and app version.
- Your push notification token, time zone and notification preferences, so we can deliver enabled celestial alerts at the appropriate local time.
- Your subscription status and related purchase/entitlement information.
- Requests for general astronomical, zodiac and guided-reflection content. These requests do not include your journal entries, name or birthday.
Online requests make connection information, such as an IP address, available to the services handling the request.
Location
With your permission, the app uses your device's location to calculate moonrise, moonset, sunrise and sunset times on your device. Your precise GPS coordinates are not sent to our backend for those calculations. The device's location and geocoding services may process location information under the relevant platform's policies.
You can instead select a city from the app's built-in city directory. The selected location is stored on your device. When automatic location is used and precise location is unavailable, the app may request an approximate location from ipapi.co, which receives your IP address. You can change the location option in Settings and deny or revoke location permission in your device settings. If no usable location is available, some local rise/set information may be unavailable.
Subscriptions and payments
A monthly or annual subscription is required to use Moon-Journal. Eligible subscribers may receive a free trial. Purchases are processed by Apple's App Store or Google Play, depending on where you subscribe. We do not receive or store your payment-card details.
RevenueCat, our subscription infrastructure provider, processes purchase, device/app and entitlement information to validate access and restore purchases. Apple, Google and RevenueCat handle information under their own privacy policies. You manage or cancel billing through the store where you subscribed.
Third-party services
The app uses a small number of service providers:
- Apple and Google — app distribution, billing, device location services and platform push delivery, as applicable.
- RevenueCat — subscription management and entitlement validation.
- Expo — push notification delivery.
- ipapi.co — approximate location from an IP address when automatic location needs a fallback.
The app does not use advertising networks, analytics SDKs or cross-app tracking.
Notifications
Celestial alerts use push delivery for the event categories and timings you enable. The app schedules optional journal reminders on your device. You can turn notifications off in the app or in your device settings.
Exports and backups
You can create JSON journal backups and CSV exports and choose where to save or share them using your device's file and sharing tools. These files can contain your journal text, emotions and lunar details. They are not encrypted or protected by App Lock. Anyone with access to a copy may be able to read it. Your device or file provider may keep additional copies according to your settings. Store them somewhere you trust and manage those copies separately.
Support
If you contact support, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your email address, message or diagnostics. Do not include journal content unless you want to share it with us.
Children's privacy
Moon-Journal is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Data retention and deletion
Use Delete app data in Settings to clear your local journal, profile, preferences, saved location and App Lock, and request removal of your device's registered data from our backend. If the server request fails, the app asks you to retry before removing local data.
Uninstalling the app normally removes its local app storage, subject to the device's backup and secure-storage behavior. Copies you exported, shared or saved in a file provider must be managed separately. Deleting app data or uninstalling does not cancel your subscription or erase billing records held by Apple, Google or RevenueCat. Manage or cancel billing in the original purchasing store.
Security
We use HTTPS for connections to our backend. Optional App Lock restricts access through the app using a PIN and supported device biometrics. Lock credentials use the device's secure storage. Biometric verification is handled by iOS or Android; the app does not receive your face or fingerprint data.
App Lock does not encrypt the journal database or exported files. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
